NEW AND WORTHY

But I’m A Virgo

I was on vacation for a week and the last thing I expected to come home to was a new zodiac sign.  I was never big into “the signs” and astrology. I did get a kick out of checking my horoscope on a daily basis – can’t forget to update that daily email this week because I’m not longer a Virgo, I’m a Leo.  My whole astrological identity is shot and I have to start re-identifying myself with the stars. Oh, I have so many questions!

  • Was I always a Leo?
  • Has my personality shifted with the earth’s axis
  • It’s not Western belief that the signs have changed…so does that mean I’m still a Virgo here but a Leo when I’m traveling somewhere else
  • Are my boyfriend and I still compatible love signs
  • How much does it cost to remove a tattoo – I just got the Virgo symbol tattooed to my forehead (just kidding…)

It’s shocking, a bit trivial (in my opinion), and kind of a let down. I’ve believed in the stars all this time. Just goes to show – we write our own destiny…

A Dream and an Empty Cup

Ted Williams c/o ABC

Ted Williams – A voice, an empty cup and God. During just another day in his life, holding a cardboard sign on the side of a highway in Columbus, Ohio, he was spotted by a reporter who videotaped him. Shocked by his amazing, smooth, sports announcer like voice, the reporter upload to YouTube and the rest is history.

The former radio announcer is grateful for his second chance and has reunited with his mother after 10 years of silence between them. At 53, Williams is clean and ready for new beginnings…

His positive attitude and gratitude are an inspiration.

I’ve been living in New York long enough to have seen and encountered my share of homeless people. As Williams said, “Don’t judge a book by its cover, everybody has their own little story.”

Their gloves may be torn and tattered holding a dirty cup, blessing God, and begging for change. Think about your parents, your kids, or potential kids and remember where you came from. What if your parent or child was homeless? Live and let live. Help out and know that what goes around comes around.

Now, a man with a dream and an empty cup, has a voice and his voice has been heard!

The New New and Worthy

I’ve had an entry drafted and waiting to be published for the new year for days now – then this morning happened.

For the past four years I’ve walk to the gym at approximately the same time every morning. On this particular morning, bundled in a heavy yarn scarf, puffer coat, and iPod blaring, I was startled by a strange hand on my leg. A man, walking towards me, passing on my right side,  grabbed me at my upper thigh attempting to pull me away from my morning routine day dreams. I swung my arm, screamed some obscenities and was on my way. It all happened so fast yet I play it over in my mind in slow motion.

I’m thankful:

  • That grabbing my thigh was all he got away with.
  • I was listening to my iPod. (I can’t imagine the things he was saying…)
  • The gym was steps away
  • I have friends at the gym that were helpful, calming, and proceeded to walk me home

My new attitude this New Year was to be positive and grateful for every waking moment. And it remains the same. I guess I can look at this as a test. Can I press on? Of course! Was it scary? Yes! But it’s all about accepting what happens  to us and learning from the experience as we go.

I was aware of my surroundings before. And now, even more than ever.

New and Worthy will still have fun fashion posts here and there. I want to come back in 2011 with a blog that discusses everything - From high heels to creepy men who like to grab innocent gym goers.

Welcome to the new New and Worthy.

WHEN: You Feel Burberry Bad

I love biker jackets as much as the next wanna-be biker chick. In fact, I love the look so much that when I walked out of the office en-route to a client meeting my colleague asked if I were going to change from biker boots to sparkling flats. I, of course, replied…

These biker boots give me confidence!

Same rings true with a nice tight black leather jacket. You would think that since Burberry Prorsum perfected the trench coat they would leave it at that. But no…Please enjoy these gorgeous jackets from their Spring ‘11 collection. We must invest in a motorcycle.

For some killer jackets for under $250 – shop our editor picks below.

WHERE: Fashion Night Out

It was Halloween for Fashionistas! Fashion lovers got dressed up and strutted from shop to shop playing their version of trick or treat – they hoped to fill their “jack-o-lanterns” with celebrity sightings, sales, gifts and more.  Since I am only one person and vowed to steer clear of the crowds this time around – I went to one place and one place only – where I stood online for 45 minutes and still didn’t get to see Nikki Richie, SJP, or Victoria Beckham – BUT thanks for the hype.

Here are some pictures I took while waiting online outside Bergdorf Goodman. The winding rows of people waiting were the best part of the night!

HOW: Befriend a Bag Lady

I have tweeted in anger regarding the quick sell out of the Mulberry for Target bags on Gilt Groupe. I still think about that small to medium size handbag, black shiny patent leather, charm heart, gold hardware, perfect for a night on the town…lusting…

c/o Fashionista.com

Anyway, on my way home from work today I spotted her on the subway – A bag lady, like myself, with the Mulberry Target bag dangling so elegantly from her arm. I honed in and quickly followed her out from underground.

I gently poked her and while she removed her ear buds, she looked at me confused. I asked her if it were the famous, Gilt Groupe sell out, and she confirmed. We walked for blocks chatting about bags, designers, and how I had to ship four duffels of handbags home to my mothers before cohabitating with my BF.

Now we’re Facebook friends. This encounter had me smiling the rest of my walk home. I know that I’m not the only handbag obsessed girl in Manhattan but being able to spot one, chat about handbags, and exchange names in order to stalk on Facebook, can really only happen in New York.

WHEN: Time Machine

When I was little, I remember riding in my mother’s white Nissan Maxima and popping in a cassette tape. The center console was filled with them – New Kids On The Block, Paula Abdul, Janet Jackson…I swear.

Now, I just hit Pandora on my Droid or plug in my iTouch. These gadgets come in all shapes and sizes, and perform tasks I never thought possible. When the compact disc was introduced I thought my life was changed forever.

I look back on those gadgets – land lines, cassette players, BEEPERS!? and feel a twang on nostalgia.

Thank heavens for creative masterminds like USBTypewriter and Freeland Studios – giving time the boot!

WHO: Katie Holmes

The reason I write about Ms. Holmes/Mrs. Cruise is because she has been popping up in front of my face everywhere. I opened my mailbox and there she was staring at me from the cover of New York Magazine’s fall fashion issue.

justjared.com

My first thought was:

“They couldn’t find someone a tad more iconic to put on the cover?”

What about Dov Charney? You know, one last hurrah before American Apparel goes under. Since its inception in 1989, American Apparel has been the go to retailer for basics.  I live in my American Apparel leggings and LBDs. Give the guy some credit, just a little…

Then, the J. Crew hype, which I was sucked into when this bag caught my attention, has Katie posing in the new fall ad campaign chowing down on cupcakes…curious?

Decadence, self indulgence? What’s the message?

What are your thoughts about Katie’s move from girl next door who wore plaid midriffs to fashionista in your face as soon as you open the mailbox?
