WHY: What’s The Point

Manolo Blahnik
It was Diana Vreeland who told Manolo Blahnik to stick to shoes. And it’s a blessing she did. His shoes have been the stars of iconic fashion films and television shows like Sex and The City and written into songs by Beyonce.
However, he does not condone the wave of celebrity infiltration.
“I hate celebrities. All those pointless girls — I won’t name names, but you know who I mean. They are ‘famous.’ Ridiculous. I like women with style: Actresses like Uma Thurman, icons like Audrey Hepburn. I like women with style to wear my shoes.”
What was once an art is now, as we’ve noted, the stuff of celebrity trade, vanity, and a meaningless show off of “statement pieces,” overacting trends, and competitive in all the wrong ways.
What do you think the point of fashion is now? Has society pushed it so far away from what it once was that it can now be deemed pointless?
