WHO: Said It Best: Lindsay Lohan/Ungaro

WWD reviewed Lindsay Lohan and Estrella Archs collaboration to bring “youth” to Parisian fashion house, Emanuel Ungaro. The “creative director”, Lohan, and designer, Arch, brought something other than youth to the runway. It was more of bubble gum meets ‘Lil Kim.

I would review this collection but no review states the obvious so tastefully and bluntly as yesterday’s WWD.

“No one ever said fashion design is brain surgery. It’s a different discipline altogether. But it is indeed a discipline and a commercial art, a fact variously muted and underscored by the celebrity infiltration of the last decade. And like brain surgery-yes, like brain surgery and all disciplines at which people work for years to develop proficiency-it has it’s rare geniuses and capable practitioners, all of whom must possess talent, skill and dedication. Being a young, pretty, controversial woman who looks good in clothes and photo ops just isn’t enough.”

It’s truth that is well written in response to the unfortunate take over of what used to be an art. New design talent like Christopher Kane (an understated capable practitioner) have earned the spotlight. This field is an art. Fashion design, fashion writing, fashion styling, and all related take practice, talent, and years of hard work and dedication. We are not judging Lohan. Who says she can’t produce works of art with training and practice? We are saying that a crash course in designing leggings does not produce a successful 44 piece spring collection.

WHERE: Paris; Me Joe, You Jane

Balmain showed on October 1st in Paris and what a show it was. All that was missing were buff men swinging tree to tree.

The asymmetrical lines and metallics meshed well together, while the draping and bandage effects were distressed and screamed “don’t mess….”

WHAT: The Fifth Element; Gucci Style

Starting with a white cut out dress, Frida Giannini showed a futuristic version of “Gucci classic.” Some looks were borderline dominatrix while others were splashed with vibrant colors.
My favorite dress was the first white cut out, reminiscent of Milla Jovovich’s look in one of my favorite “fashion” films, The Fifth Element.

We love the lace up detail and long straight ponytails. The horse bits are always peeking out somewhere at Gucci and we can’t wait to get our hands on this horse bit bracelet.

The accessories were covered in silver hardware while the shoes and boots were cut out, platforms. Check out these boots, so killer.

Where: To The Side, Wangstyle

It’s messy and reminiscent of Rapunzel. Forget your bedtime stories, it’s time for knee high socks, men’s baggy track pants, makeshift skirts circa wrap waist 80’s, and varsity jackets. The side braid is something we’re not waiting for spring to rock.

We’re inspired by the rolled out of bed, hopped into my boyfriends heather grey sweats look. It’s relaxed and sexy.

Wang is not clueless but the knee high socks sure bring back memories of my dream closet. And this makeshift skirt is a clever rendition of what I used to do with my matching windbreaker outfit circa the late 1980’s. We do love the reference…

How: It’s Done: Zac Posen

Spring forward into bright colors and fluff sleeves with Zac Posen’s spring collection. We love the bright greens, shocking blues, and sultry lighting.

Some pieces are award worthy. Off the shoulder, spaghetti strap goodness, embellished with flowers, slit straight up the middle.

From bib necklaces to large chokers and gigantic belt buckles to skinny belts, this look is a fantastic combination of blue and indigo. It’s ballerina meets ice skating trend setter.

The necklines leave a vast exposure of shoulder and collar bone. This green number is a mix of floral print, skinny belt, and gathered fabric creating a billowing effect.

What: Black, White, and Laced All Over

Derek Lam’s Spring ‘10 collection consisted of bright colors, asymmetrical dresses, and loud prints. What really grabbed our attention were the shoes. The black and white strap, platform sandals were the cherry on top (or bottom) of his 33 piece collection.
The collection was dressed with eye catching brights but our eyes went towards this classic black and white dress.

We did not choose this look because of Lily, even though she looks stunning. Her waist is cinched with a black leather, gold stud belt that match her black nail polish. The oversized draping bow on her shoulder excentuate the burnt orange and smudge bluegreen of her eyes.

The shoes stole the show. Platform peep toes and past ankle lace ups combined urban with lady.

When: Oh BOY, Fashion Week “end”

Scott Sternberg, designer of Boy By Band of Outsiders, initially stole my love with knit ties and boat shoes. When he added women’s wear to his collection, I was thrilled.
According to Style.com the Spring ‘10 collection is “Malibu in the ’70’s.” One of our favorite parts of Band of Outsiders are who he chooses for his campaigns…Jason Shwartzman (go see I Heart Huckabees) and Kristen Dunst.
Hair infused with salty beach wind, avaiators, and boat shoes set the scene for Sternberg’s latest collection.
Our favorite looks include bandage striped mini’s, cropped khaki jackets, and plaid button downs.

The best look of the 43 piece collection (including menswear) is this plaid number below. Rolled up khaki shorts and a plaid button down paired with a casual navy, one button blazer is the perfect transition outfit from a winding down winter into a cool spring. A pair of navy tights would make the transition warmer. We were also thinking, lightweight scarf and knit wool cap. This collection makes us want to fast forward through fall!
