WHO: alice + olivia Makes Music for Fall 2010

With an amazing clothing line and  collaborations with MAC, Payless, Erickson Beamon and more, we weren’t shocked when alice + olivia designer, Stacey Bendet made a music video, directed by Bridget Palardy, featuring two very talented musicians. While electric violinist, Caitlin Moe, and DJ, Mia Moretti joined forces to produce some killer tunes, they were also clad in alice + olivia’s Fall 2010 collection. Fashion music videos are the wave of the future.

Get To Know: Morah Shay

“Dear Music,”

Thank you for the fresh sounds of Morah Shay.  Our favorite track- Dear Music – is one of the free songs you can listen to on her website. You can also view more photos and enjoy five additional songs on her MySpace page.

We were so intrigued by her unique voice and beautiful melodies that we needed to find out more about this break out star!

Get to know Morah Shay -

How would you describe your style of music?

I have a really hard time describing my style of music, because I believe the music I create is a reflection of who I am, so in a sense my style is me, combined with elements of musical influences from; Esperanza Spalding, Lauryn Hill, and many, many others.

Which general music genre would your music fall under?

I would say it’s pop at the core, because of the catchy melodies and the structure of the songs.  However, the musical theory behind all of the chords and instrument arrangements would be classified as Jazz.

At what age did you start playing the guitar? Singing?

The first time I played the guitar was my senior year of high school, but I didn’t get serious about playing guitar until my second year of college, I was 19.  As far as singing, I’ve always loved singing, from performing in choir to singing in the shower!  I would say I stared singing in high school, because that’s when I started taking voice lessons.

Were you ever in a band? If yes, please elaborate.

Yes! My junior year of college I was in an all GIRL cover band, called Laced with Bella.  The band was formed at my college, and there were six girls in the band, two of the girls were from South Africa, the bass player and I were from Minnesota and the other guitar player was from Colombia—literally we were from all other the world!  I played electric guitar and we covered hard rock tunes like Rage Against the Machine and Paramore, along with pop tunes like Katy Perry!  It was tons of FUN and LOTS of drama!

You just arrived in New York about four weeks ago. What intimates you about New York’s music scene?

I would have to say the size of the scene is overwhelming.  I would love to start a band, but don’t know where to find players.  Any drummers, bass player, guitar players out there? Holler at me!

If you could perform live anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?

I don’t have any preference, as long as it has good energy in the air, and people feel the music! I just want people to feel inspired, have a good time, and make noise!

What inspires you to write music?

My friends, family, people I meet, other musicians, nature, my life experiences, pain, joy, emotions, love, loss, and spiritual faith.

If you could meet any musician, dead or alive, who would it be?

Nina Simone

If you could ask them one question…

What was one of the best experiences you had performing live and why?

What are your thoughts on Lady Gaga?

Mmmm ….. I guess she’s pure entertainment.   She’s very talented, and I admire her dedication, and work ethic.  I don’t particularly love dance music, but I can appreciate her style for what it is.

Fashion Flipping: Whitney Art Party

The annual Whitney Art Party was held at a Soho loft separated in two. One side was dedicated to art and the other allotted for lounging.  We’re sure the art was grand – but the grandeur of the attendees had us swooning. Many were garbed in BCBG Max Azria, as the designer sponsored the event for the fourth year in a row.

Our two favorite looks of the night include The Misshapes and designer, Cynthia Rowley. The DJ trio gave back in black a whole new meaning and Cynthia Rowley was a walking work of art in a majestic long sleeve mini dress.

WHAT: I Love Beyonce

We’re a bit Beyonce obsessed this week, and for good reasons – 10 to be precise. We posted on the sneak preview to her new music video, “Why Don’t You Love Me.”

Today we would love to share the full length video with you. We’ve also included the top 10 reasons why we think this music video is genius.

1. Reminds us of I Love Lucy 2. Fake tears and caked make up 3. Midriffs with high waisted shorts 4. Remember when smoking was cool? 5. Beyonce does the laundry by hand – wearing pearls 6. Turquoise nails and purple lips 7. Every finger rings 8. Bubble baths 9. You only need one thigh high 10. The song

WHY: Beyonce is “Riveting”

Beyonce’s upcoming music video for “Why Don’t You Love Me,” a bonus track on I Am…Sasha Fierce, is reminiscent of Rosie the Riveter (aka. Shirley Karp Dick) and all women who worked factory jobs during World War II.

Of course Beyonce adds a little sexy to the iconic “riveter” look – with thigh highs, hot red lipstick, and daisy dukes. Denim and plaid button down shirts have already resurfaced, but can we expect to see them tied at the belly?  We love early forties fashion fused with modern pieces.

Designers like Peter Som, Rosa Cha, and Blugirl touch on this look in different ways. Rosa Cha with a red head wrap, Peter Som with daisy dukes, and Blugirl with a cropped top.

Sunday Sit Down: One Shirt; One Weekend

We were away this weekend and tried very hard to pack light. It was only for one night and we didn’t want to show up with two duffels and a carry on.  In a fit of minimalistic rage, we decided to pack one shirt – among other accessories, of course.  With one canvas tote in hand we felt, that for the first time, we did it right.

Pictured below are three black shirts with a staple black Marc Jacobs bag. When packing for a weekend or overnight getaway, only one purse is necessary. However, there is always room for a small clutch.

We watched “The Scheme” play by the beach. The music was fantastic, the weather was breezy and sunny, and our trouser shorts were the perfect fit! We were glad we had our Alice + Olivia liquid leggings to shade us from the sun and chilly breeze. Casual sneakers made the transition from concrete concert to frisbee on the beach, seamless.

To celebrate a friends birthday at night we swapped trouser shorts for a tulip skirt and replaced sneakers with grey booties. To spruce up the casual cotton shirt we added a chunky silver necklace and colorful rings.

We hope we’ve inspired you to pack lighter when getting away – and a quick thank you to The Scheme for an awesome Saturday in the sun!

Oh, the talent…

WHERE: Birds Of A Feather

We’re not big fans of reality TV but we have been following this season’s America Idol since the auditions. After Crystal Bowersox’s performance last night, not that we needed convincing, she is by far our favorite. Her voice is unique and often mesmerizing.

We find ourselves inspired by her style – wooden jewels and feathered earrings. She can be seen sporting feathers in her hair in memory of booted singer, Lily Scott.  We’ve scouted some feather earrings and jewelry to help get the look. Sway and Cake offers a nice selection of feathered earrings for just $48.

Sunday Sit Down: Coachella Style

Coachella has come to an end but the fashion statements will continue through spring into summer. We’ve included some of our favorite outfits below.

Kelly Osbourne brought sheer, feminine flowers to Cali.  A touch of metallic and golden studs add edge to her outfit. We love her new purplish, grey do and orange sunglasses.

Straw hats were topping off a majority of the looks at Coachella this year (and almost every year.) Take note of Hayden Panettiere’s soft, straw hat. She takes it a step further by pairing it with a grey motorcycle jacket. This casual look, complete with black aviators and a simple white v-neck shirt, is classic and trendy. For those colder nights be sure to layer denim cutoffs with tights or stockings.

The ever trendy Whitney Port, sports a jumper at the art and music festival. Tangerine isn’t the easiest color to pull off so we’ve included some various jumper options below.

Thank you for shopping through our Coachella looks. If you come across any others, and are itching to get the look – email us!
